The company was founded as Carr-Gomm (Tyneside) in October 1973 as a branch of the national Carr-Gomm society – which was founded by Sir Richard Carr Gomm to provide supported housing for homeless, vulnerable and isolated people.

From 1973 to 1991 we existed as Carr Gomm (Tyneside), running a small number of shared housing projects alongside workshop and training facilities. In 1991 we developed into Byker Bridge Housing Association, where we grew a range of services, including taking on the management and ownership of the Joseph Cowen Health Centre in 1996 and rebuilding our emergency hostel provision Byker Bridge House in 2007.
With this growth, we diversified our services expanding into five local authorities across Tyneside and changing our name to Tyne Housing to reflect this.
Today we employ over 100 staff members and over 80 volunteers across the region and support over 1,000 vulnerable people every year.
